Amid the impending closure of the Jefferson Day Report Center, which serves low-level offenders in Kearneysville, Berkeley County has stepped in to accept the transfer of its enrollees to its own Day Report Center in Martinsburg. This transition, prompted by funding issues at the Jefferson center that supports around 190 active participants, raises concerns among local officials, such as Prosecuting Attorney Matt Harvey, who worry about the logistical challenges and accessibility for vulnerable individuals during their recovery journey. The Berkeley County Commission's decision ensures that support continues, although new travel demands may complicate participants' access to essential services, as highlighted by Harvey's call for potentially opening a new facility within local bounds.
