The Eastern Panhandle Conservation District is hosting its 17th annual Big Tree Contest, focusing this year on the Linden tree, primarily to raise awareness about tree species and conservation. With a deadline for entries set for August 15, residents from towns like Ranson and Harpers Ferry are encouraged to measure tree circumferences and submit their findings. The contest, which began in 2009, honors the legacy of Fred W. Besley, Maryland’s first state forester. The winning participant will receive $500 and recognition at the EPCD fall banquet, highlighting the importance of trees in the region.
