Charles Town Family Honors WWII Veteran in Normandy

Family stands where their father once served in Normandy 80 years later

In a touching tribute to World War II veteran John Rutherford, family members from Charles Town traveled to Normandy, France, to honor his legacy during the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Initially seeking his name on the nonexistent Wall of Liberty, Patsy Kidwell and Claire Webb, along with their spouses, took an emotional journey to find the memorial of the runway where Rutherford served. Guided by a local expert in World War II history, they found the site and reflected on the sacrifices of those who fought. Their visit also allowed them to connect with other veterans and experience the humbling history of the D-Day landings, leaving them with lasting memories of their shared family heritage and the significance of their journey.
