During a recent meeting in Charles Town, the Jefferson County Commission discussed a proposed groundwater study presented by Mark Kozar from the U.S. Geological Survey. The study aims to assess groundwater availability amidst rising urban development and drought risks in the region. Kozar emphasized the importance of understanding groundwater flow in the karst terrain to manage and protect this critical resource, especially with increasing contamination risks. The study, estimated to cost $800,000 and take three to four years, will utilize historical data to model future groundwater scenarios. Although no decision was made at the meeting, the commission plans to expand the Water Advisory Committee's membership.
