Charles Town Considers Traffic Improvements at Western Gateway

Town hall talks future of Charles Town’s western gateway

A recent town hall meeting in Charles Town, hosted by The Journal, discussed proposed changes to two key intersections at the city's western gateway, following a traffic study by the Department of Highways. The study highlighted significant delays at the intersection of West Washington Street, MLK Jr. Avenue, and Summit Point Road, particularly during peak hours. Consultants presented two main solutions: constructing a roundabout to improve traffic flow or adding a traffic light, with respective costs of $4.5 million and $2.8 million. Residents voiced their concerns regarding encroachment on properties and potential traffic issues related to nearby railroad crossings, emphasizing the need for balance between development and community ambiance. Minor adjustments to the West Washington and West Street intersection were also proposed, with further evaluations required before any final decisions are made.
