Jefferson County Commission approves plan after announcing the closure of JCDR

The Journal reports that during a recent meeting, the Jefferson County Commission announced the closure of the Jefferson County Day Report Center, which serves as an alternative treatment facility for offenders, aiming to prevent incarceration. Following the abrupt withdrawal of a grant application by the center, county Administrator Edwina Benites quickly devised a plan in collaboration with key stakeholders including Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Harvey. This plan will involve a partnership with Berkeley County and the Berkeley Day Report Center to ensure continuity of services, including transportation support. The commission is optimistic about establishing a new center by fiscal year 2027, highlighting the community's urgent need for such services amidst rising substance use.
