WV Senate Committee Amends Property Tax Split In Data Center Bill

A new bill to establish special tax districts for data centers has passed the Senate Economic Development Committee, with amendments that benefit local governments like the ones in Ranson and Charles Town. House Bill 2014, which allows localities to retain more property tax revenues, addresses the concerns raised by County Commissioners about funding essential services such as fire and ambulance. Despite these changes, Senators opted not to allow counties to impose zoning regulations on data centers in certified microgrid districts. The bill is expected to be quickly voted on by the full Senate before the session closes on April 12, 2023, as the area prepares for substantial investment in data center infrastructure.
