The National Park Service announced plans to demolish five deteriorating structures at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, starting January 21. Known as the Henkle Farm House buildings, these structures have posed a safety risk to visitors and staff and will be removed to enhance the park's battlefield landscape as outlined in the 2010 General Management Plan. Superintendent Tanya Gossett emphasized community input in the decision, and the demolition aims to restore the park's historical significance while reducing maintenance costs. The structures were abandoned since the 1950s, and their removal will help preserve the site of the 1862 Battle of Harpers Ferry, a pivotal event in local history.
