At a press conference at the New River Gorge Canyon Rim Visitors Center, Governor Patrick Morrisey and Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby celebrated the state's initiative to keep its national parks open during a government shutdown. Highlighting a donation agreement for nearly $98,000, Morrisey emphasized West Virginia's commitment to visitor services at the New River Gorge and Harpers Ferry. With October being a peak tourist season for activities like Gauley Season and Bridge Day, both officials underscored the significant economic impact of tourism, which generates over $9 billion annually and supports thousands of jobs. This initiative ensures that visitors can continue enjoying the beauty and history of the region, critical for maintaining local businesses and community vitality, especially in towns like Harpers Ferry and Ranson.
