During the inaugural Heart of the Community Awards held on August 15 at Corner Connections, nine residents from Shepherdstown and surrounding areas were honored for their impactful contributions to the local Black community. Organized as part of the Black Policy Day – Eastern Panhandle Experience, the awards recognized leaders including former Shepherdstown council member Jenny Haynes and Jefferson County Magistrate Arthena Roper, the first Black magistrate in the area. Each recipient's commitment to fostering inclusivity and community improvement was celebrated, highlighting the transformative efforts that strengthen ties among residents.
