The Spirit of Jefferson reports that with the county's judicial functions relocating to a new facility on North George Street, the Jefferson County Museum has expressed interest in transforming the historic courthouse on East Washington Street into a new museum. As the county commissions consider future uses for various downtown buildings in Charles Town, all have unanimously agreed to retain the historic courthouse, which recently received a National Historic Landmark designation. This site is notable for its involvement in significant historical events, such as the treason trials during the Mine Wars and John Brown's trial following his raid at Harpers Ferry.
