The Independent Observer | Friday, February 7, 2025
The Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission (JCHLC), established in 1974, plays a crucial role in preserving the area's rich history by designating local landmarks. Governed by a board of volunteer commissioners, the JCHLC collaborates with the State Historic Preservation Office to protect significant structures like the Woodbyrne house and the James Osbourn house, which honor the region's heritage. Currently, there are 73 National Register landmarks and 135 recognized county landmarks, ensuring the local history is carefully curated and celebrated.
