In a case that he claims was politically motivated, Steve Cox, a bail bondsman and former candidate for sheriff, was acquitted of attempted extortion related to a conversation with Sheriff Tom Hansen outside a church in Kearneysville. Cox alleged that the charge was an effort by Hansen to hinder his campaign for the upcoming election. Hansen, who ran unopposed in 2024, continues to serve as sheriff, highlighting the contentious political landscape in the area.
