In a significant ruling by a three-judge panel, Jefferson County Commissioners Jennifer Krouse and Tricia Jackson were removed from office due to their repeated absences from commission meetings, which violated their official duties as elected officials. The removal followed a petition from Prosecuting Attorney Matt Harvey, citing willful neglect and refusal to perform their responsibilities, including appointing a replacement for a vacated commissioner seat. Additionally, Krouse and Jackson faced 42 misdemeanor charges, stemming from their failure to attend meetings from September to November 2023. After accepting a plea deal, both were fined for their misconduct, with the court determining their actions severely undermined local governance in Charles Town and surrounding areas.
