Martinsburg Artist Denny Clarke Receives Award for Watercolors

87-year-old local artist wins award for excellence at West Virginia Watercolor Society juried exhibition

At 87, Dennis 'Denny' Clarke, a Martinsburg artist, recently earned an award for excellence at the 2025 West Virginia Watercolor Society Aqueous National Juried Exhibition for his painting 'Harbor Master.' With a passion for watercolor and acrylic painting that began when he took over a class for his wife, Clarke has dedicated over 11,000 hours to creating art while also teaching and donating pieces for local charities. His upcoming exhibit, 'Marine Scenes,' at the Washington County Arts Council Gallery on July 3, showcases his love for vibrant colors and intricate details. As a signature member of both the West Virginia Watercolor Society and the Baltimore Watercolor Society, Clarke continues to inspire with his compelling approach to art that reflects his life in the area.
