Martinsburg man charged with injuring Virginia police chief as part of crime spree

A Martinsburg man, Juan Vashaun Payne, has been arrested following a brazen crime spree through areas including Ranson and Clarke County. After allegedly injuring Middletown Police Chief Gary Benedict during an attempted carjack in Virginia, Payne led law enforcement on a multi-jurisdictional chase that crossed into West Virginia. The pursuit ended in Ranson, where Payne was taken into custody. He faces multiple felony charges and is being held on a $50,000 bond. Chief Benedict sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at Winchester Medical Center, as reported by WV Metro News.
