In January 2025, the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia designated the Middleway Historic District as endangered due to potential threats from the proposed Mountain Pure water bottling facility. This decision followed a Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission report, highlighting the project's risk to this Category I Historical Site, which embodies an intact rural village with structures dating back to the 1700s and 1800s. Executive Director Danielle Parker emphasized the need for awareness and protection of Middleway’s unique historical and cultural significance, urging public officials and citizens to take action against developments that jeopardize this treasure.
