The Preservation Alliance of West Virginia has classified Middleway as 'endangered' due to concerns over a proposed Mountain Pure Water Bottling Facility that threatens the village's historic integrity. With buildings dating back to the late 18th century, locals, including members of the Protect Middleway group, have mobilized against the project, citing risks to the environment, traffic issues, and heritage preservation. Community engagement is highlighted following a forum held at Grace Episcopal Church, demonstrating strong opposition to the facility that could extract significant water from local aquifers and increase heavy truck traffic through the narrow streets. As discussions continue, the Jefferson County Planning Commission is set to review the project again on February 11.
