On October 20, the Shepherd Speaks StoryCorps Project at Shepherd University featured retired Navy SEAL Commander Tom Deitz, who shared his inspiring career journey and experiences from Operation Desert Storm. The event, held at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History & Education, highlighted the importance of storytelling in preserving the legacies of local and national figures. Under the direction of the Center for Appalachian Studies, this initiative contributes to a national collection that celebrates the lives of ordinary and extraordinary Americans, bringing together community members and military dignitaries while emphasizing values instilled by family and faith.
