Ranson Police Department Recruitment Faces New Challenges

Ranson fails to join the police pension program as department recruitment is still in danger

The Ranson City Council opted not to join a state pension program intended for the police department on May 20, which could exacerbate a recruitment crisis as four officers left for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office over retirement benefits. With only 12 officers left in a department of 18 amid national recruitment challenges, the feasibility of joining the program remains uncertain due to high costs and legislative barriers. City Manager Todd Wilt highlighted difficulties in communication with the West Virginia Retirement Board as a contributing factor in the decision-making process, raising concerns about maintaining adequate law enforcement in the community.
