As volunteer firefighter numbers decline nationwide, the WVU Extension Fire Service plays a vital role in training and retaining volunteers, especially in rural areas like Ranson and Charles Town, where fire services rely heavily on volunteers. The State Fire Academy at Jackson’s Mill has introduced programs like the Junior Firefighter Camp, which trains youth and encourages them to serve locally. Current volunteers benefit from advanced training in various emergency scenarios, contributing to community safety. This ongoing training is essential as the average age of volunteers rises, ensuring that departments can respond effectively across the region, including during critical incidents.
