On the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army, military leaders honored the legacy of service during a commemoration in Shepherdstown, highlighting the rich history of local participation in the military. U.S. Army Secretary Frank Vitale acknowledged the significant contributions of West Virginians, noting the state's high per capita military service rate and active engagement in disaster response. Major General (Ret.) James Hoyer emphasized the importance of individual soldiers, drawing connections to the D-Day invasion and the sacrifices made throughout history. The celebration included a tribute to the original 98 militiamen who marched to form the Continental Army, showcasing the community's deep-rooted military heritage at Morgan’s Run Park.
