Shepherdstown Library Celebrates Three Years of Butterfly Release

Local library marks third year of raising, releasing butterflies

In Shepherdstown, the SPL celebrates three years of raising and releasing butterflies, engaging local children with hands-on science through caterpillar habitats. According to Jessie Ward, the children’s library assistant, this summer 15 butterflies were raised, including various species beyond monarchs, fostering environmental awareness and appreciation among young visitors. The program emphasizes the importance of butterflies in ecosystems and invites children to witness their transformation, further enriching the community's connection to local biodiversity.
