Shepherdstown's own Matthew Kushin, a communications professor at Shepherd University, recently published his debut coming-of-age novel, 'Beware the Smart Kids.' Inspired by his experiences as a father and observations of the rising mental health crisis among youth, Kushin crafted a story that explores themes of happiness and mentorship through the character of a troubled teen in a small Appalachian town. His novel reflects a deep understanding of local dynamics and the challenges faced by today's young people, engaging both adolescents and adults alike.
