Veterinary officials confirm that a private horse in the area has been euthanized due to strangles, a contagious equine disease that spreads rapidly among horses. A second horse is suspected to be infected as the community in towns like Charles Town and Ranson remains on alert. Strangles, caused by the bacteria Streptococcus equi subspecies equi, can also be carried asymptomatically, raising concerns about transmission through common equipment and contact.
