Jefferson Soil & Water Conservation District receives $20,000 from county commission for stream debris removal program

During a recent meeting, Jefferson County Commissioners approved a $20,000 grant for the Stream Debris Removal Program, administered by Jefferson Soil & Water Conservation. This funding will be matched by the state, resulting in a total of $36,000 aimed at removing debris from local waterways, thereby preventing flooding and protecting water quality in areas from Irondale to Dillonvale. Program Manager Aidan Sammut highlighted the importance of the initiative for both flood prevention and local wildlife, particularly the endangered eastern hellbender salamander. The program encourages landowners to engage with the agency for debris removal projects, ensuring community engagement in environmental conservation efforts.
