Berkeley County Okays Correctional Program Transfer, But Concerns Remain

The recent decision to transfer participants from the closing Kearneysville-based Jefferson Day Report Center to the Berkeley County Day Report Center in Martinsburg offers a pivotal solution for local low-level offenders struggling with substance use. This development comes as a shock to local officials, including Prosecuting Attorney Matt Harvey, who voiced concerns about the risks associated with the abrupt closure of the nonprofit facility. With around 190 active participants, the transition aims to maintain essential rehabilitation services that support the recovery journeys of individuals in Charles Town and surrounding areas. Despite noting potential logistical hurdles, such as increased travel distances for participants, the Berkeley County Commission remains committed to aiding those affected.
