In a recent edition of The Journal's Unsung Heroes series, Charles Town resident Wayne 'Doug' Masnick, a 26-year U.S. Coast Guard veteran, reflected on his life of service and personal resilience. After enlisting in 1977 to save lives rather than partake in conflict, Masnick's career took him around the globe, including vital rescues in challenging circumstances. He overcame adversity both in service and after a life-altering motorcycle accident in 2008, crediting his military training and the support of his family for his recovery. Today, Masnick stands as a pillar of strength for his community, embodying the service tradition alive in families across towns like Charles Town and Harpers Ferry.
