New River Gorge and Harpers Ferry Parks Reopen Amid Shutdown

West Virginia has become the first state in the nation to reopen its national parks, specifically the New River Gorge National Park and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, following a federal government shutdown. Governor Patrick Morrisey, at a press conference held at the Canyon Rim Visitors Center, announced the signing of a donor agreement with the National Park Service allowing public access during the shutdown. The governor emphasized the parks' significance to the local economy and encouraged tourism, especially in October when fall foliage draws many visitors. This announcement is particularly desirable for residents of nearby towns such as Harpers Ferry and Charles Town, who rely on park tourism.
